Why embed careers into our curriculum?

 

Here at Downs View Life Skills College, we offer our students:

  • NEW INSPIRATION: providing the single inspirational moment that changes the direction of a learners` life.

  • MOTIVATION: Learners see that subjects are relevant to the real world and therefore why it’s important to study them.

 

Vision:

Creating a Brighter Future

At Downs View we have a dedicated Lead Teaching Assistant (LTA) who is a trained Job Coach. She provides career and work related learning.
 

Our career programme is centred on increasing our learners’ employability skills.


Each term has a different focus:

  • Autumn term: Exploring different careers

  • Spring term: Career choice

  • Summer term: Developing understanding of preferred career

Systematic Instruction is an approach that we use to support our learners develop independence and it is one of our core values. 


Our programme includes appropriate work experience, work-place learning and work placements.  

Current partnerships include:

  • Cake the difference 

  • Brighton & Hove City Parks – grounds and parks maintenance department

  • the SCOPE shop

  • The Real Junk Food Project

  • Pizza Express

  • Caterlink 

  • Fab Café

  • Eden Perfume

  • Brighton Elim

  • Project: adopt a station: Portslade station 

  • Art exhibition at Hove train station

 

The placements are tailored to the individual’s interests and aspirations.
